It fills me with excitement to bring you the review of a casino that is making great strides in what they are putting out there. In my two decades in this industry, I've never come across a real-money casino that wraps a role-playing game (RPG) and social casino services around its offering quite like Casino Heroes. But does it work? That's the big question. I'm going to take the time in this review to try and make it clear what exactly Casino Heroes is up to, and to judge whether this is a site for you more traditional gamblers to trot over to.

I understand that many of you will be immediately put off by this review or by what you see on the Casino Heroes home page. The idea of mixing role-playing games with casino gambling is completely foreign to most gamblers. But think of it this way: what if casino games were an integral part of a role-playing game? Then the work that Casino Heroes is doing really pushes the envelope of what casinos can do, and I hope it serves as an inspiration for the kind of risks that more establishments will take.

“Mega” Jackpots

For those who still believe in the traditional casino (like me, until my job forced me to be more open-minded), you will find plenty of amazing jackpots at Casino Heroes. These include the Mega Moolah slot machine from Microgaming, which currently has a jackpot of over 7 million Euros! One of these days I am going to hit a big progressive, I just know it! The Bad Stuff

Innovation is a Bad Thing

I suspect that many players will be immediately turned off by the presentation of the Casino Heroes website. There are not enough references to the actual casino games, and instead we are shown a number of different characters and worlds that are part of the RPG portion of the experience. My suggestion: Management should redesign the home page to include more references to the actual casino and, in turn, attract a more traditional real-money player.

This review is going to be very different from many of the reviews I have written in the past. Before I get into the casino games and talk about each section in more detail, I think it is important that you understand exactly how the whole site works, including the RPG and social aspects of the game. The Casino Heroes website revolves around a game where you play as a hero whose main task is to eliminate the bosses that the evil dragon has placed around the Treasure Mountain to prevent anyone from finding the king's crown. It seems that the crown was stolen during a treasure hunt and the thieves hid the crown on Treasure Mountain.

Are you still there?

I admit it is a bit immature if you just want to play a few table games and slots. But hear me out.

To progress through the different worlds and unlock the next one, you must collect XP earned by playing the slots and table games. This is just like a regular casino where you earn points for playing. But instead of just earning points, when you fill up your status bar, you have the chance to fight a boss. If you win against this boss, which can be anything from a giant crab to a giant rocket, you earn rewards that can include bonus money, rubies that can be spent in the store, and free spins. If you lose the boss battle, you will have to earn XP again to get to that point.

See, it isn’t all that bad, right?

Hopefully, the RPG component of the game is now understandable; let's delve into the casino games themselves.

Slots

There is no question that Casino Heroes is a slots-heavy casino. This makes sense given the type of player they seem to be trying to attract - it seems like we're all about to get there, and the RPG functionality is pretty basic.

So, I dove into Mega Moolah and immediately set about trying to live a life of luxury in the realm of virtual slot machines. Well, I'm not sure what I did wrong, but two things happened during my time with this game: one, I didn't hit the jackpot, which means it's definitely still up for grabs; and two, I managed to accumulate enough points during my time with this game to clumsily challenge the Big Boss at the end.

The full Slots catalog is a huge assortment, and that's thanks to having multiple providers in the same lobby. You'll find everything from old-school 3-reelers to more innovative offerings with fleshed-out characters and storylines. These few names I'm about to drop just jumped out at me, but I might be overstating their novelty, because you really can't go wrong in this category.

I am glad I started with the slots section, as I would have felt let down if I had visited my first choice among the site's games: the video poker variants. Although the site could have featured all 26 Microgaming variants, it instead chose to offer only a few of the available games. At least one of the few offerings has a progressive jackpot, so there is that.

So for me, getting a positive result in this area is more critical for this casino than perhaps any other casino I have looked at in my career. Would I Play at Casino Heroes?

I have never been so undecided about an answer to this question regarding any other casino I have reviewed. This one is so special and different that I want to make sure my answer is completely honest and well thought out.

First of all, I would like to loudly and wholeheartedly applaud the folks at Casino Heroes for what they are trying to accomplish with this site. The gaming world is evolving and operators of all kinds need to get with the times or risk being left in the dust. That said, I have my doubts that the real money online casino world is quite ready for the role playing game part of the site. I imagine there will be much more buzz around the concept if it is paired with other themes. For example, playing sports games instead of fighting bosses could really raise the energy level.

From a pure online casino perspective, it was great to see so many software providers, but disappointing to see so few table games and video poker options. I didn't count them, but there seemed to be well over 100 different types of slots, which is fine and good for all you slot lovers. But the site needs to do something to address the apparent lack of other types of casino games to appeal to those of us who really only want to play casino games and not the other areas of the site.

In general, I have a very high opinion of Casino Heroes. If you are an individual who is willing to give something different a try, then I can absolutely steer you towards this site. If you are a traditionalist and are not quite ready to take the plunge into the kind of site that Casino Heroes is, then I suggest you check out some of my other reviews.
